PTSD Trauma-Focused Treatment

Trauma changes your brain and your body. Reconnect delivers online PTSD therapy through 1:1 virtual sessions, using EMDR, Brainspotting and somatic work to help you process traumatic memories, regulate your nervous system, and reclaim your life from the grip of PTSD.

Understanding PTSD & Trauma

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder develops when the brain and nervous system become stuck in a state of heightened alert following a traumatic experience. Rather than processing and filing the memory as past, the brain continues to react as though the danger is present, leading to a cascade of symptoms that can profoundly affect every area of life.

Trauma-focused therapy targets that cycle directly, and it can be delivered over secure video without changing the therapy itself. What changes is the logistics, not the mechanism.

At Reconnect, we treat the full spectrum of trauma responses:

Recognizing the Signs & Symptoms

PTSD and complex trauma can manifest in many ways, and their intensity often fluctuates over time. In complex trauma the picture usually clusters differently, with emotional regulation, sense of self, and relationships carrying the most weight day to day. You may recognize some of these, or all of them.

  • Hypervigilance — a constant state of being on guard, scanning for threats, difficulty relaxing, and an exaggerated startle response. Your nervous system is locked in overdrive, unable to distinguish between real danger and everyday situations.
  • Flashbacks & Intrusive Memories — vivid, involuntary re-experiencing of traumatic events that can feel as though the trauma is happening again in the present moment. These may be triggered by sights, sounds, smells, or physical sensations.
  • Nightmares & Sleep Disruption — trauma-related nightmares, difficulty falling or staying asleep, and a general sense that your body cannot fully rest. Sleep disturbance is one of the most common and distressing symptoms of PTSD.
  • Emotional Dysregulation — emotions that arrive at full volume with no warning, or that will not come back down once they rise. Common in C-PTSD and developmental trauma, and one of the clearest signals that trauma work needs to begin with stabilization rather than processing.
  • Emotional Numbness — a protective shutdown where you feel disconnected from your emotions, unable to experience joy or closeness with others. This is your nervous system's way of protecting you from overwhelming feelings.
  • Avoidance — going to great lengths to avoid people, places, conversations, or activities that remind you of the trauma. Over time, avoidance can shrink your world and increase isolation.
  • Dissociation — feeling detached from your body, your surroundings, or your sense of self. Dissociation exists on a spectrum from mild spacing out to more profound depersonalization and derealization experiences.
  • Difficulty Trusting — especially common in C-PTSD and developmental trauma, a deep struggle to feel safe in relationships, to believe others are trustworthy, or to allow yourself to be vulnerable.

Online PTSD Therapy: How Virtual Treatment Works

Reconnect is a telehealth practice. Every program, session and level of care happens over secure video, and there is no clinic to travel to. That is a deliberate design choice, not a limitation.

Research on trauma-focused psychotherapy delivered over secure video has compared it against the same treatment delivered in an office, and it holds up. What changes online is the logistics. The therapy itself does not.

What a virtual session actually looks like

You join from a private space on a device you already own. Sessions are 1:1 with a trauma specialist, not a group intake queue. Your clinician can see your face and upper body clearly, which is how they track arousal, dissociation and readiness in real time, and adjust the pace when you need them to.

What online PTSD therapy makes possible

You work with clinicians who specialize in trauma rather than whoever is nearest. You practice grounding and regulation skills in the rooms where your symptoms actually show up. And treatment continues through the weeks when leaving the house would have meant cancelling.

What Makes Video Work Well

A private, consistent space you can count on. Headphones. A stable connection. And a clinician who is actively tracking your nervous system on camera and adjusting pace rather than pushing through.

When You Need More Structure

If symptoms are destabilizing, a higher-intensity virtual track gives you daily or near-daily support to stabilize first. Virtual PHP runs 25 hours a week. You step down as you steady.

How RITTM Works

RITTM, the Reconnect Integrative Trauma Treatment Model, is Dr. Darsa’s proprietary framework, built over more than twenty years of clinical work in trauma. It moves through three phases rather than starting with the trauma itself, and it combines top-down cognitive work with bottom-up, body-based therapy.

Phase One: Stabilization & Safety

Building trust, internal resources, and enough regulation to make processing survivable. In complex trauma this phase is often the longest, and rushing it is how trauma treatment goes wrong.

Phase Two: Trauma Processing

Working the traumatic material directly with EMDR, Brainspotting, Somatic Experiencing and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, paced to what your nervous system can hold that day.

Phase Three: Integration & Growth

Consolidating the gains and rebuilding a sense of self that is not organized around what happened to you.

In practice that means EMDR, Brainspotting, somatic and sensorimotor work, mindfulness, HeartMath coherence training and art therapy, all delivered in 1:1 individual telehealth sessions.

Complex PTSD: When Trauma Was Prolonged or Repeated

Not all trauma is a single event. When trauma repeated or continued over time, often beginning early and often inside relationships that were supposed to be safe, the pattern it leaves behind looks different. Alongside the intrusive memories and hypervigilance of PTSD, complex PTSD tends to bring persistent difficulty regulating emotion, a corroded sense of self, and trouble staying close to people.

The classification depends on the system. ICD-11 treats complex PTSD as its own diagnosis. DSM-5 folds it into a broader PTSD diagnosis rather than separating it out. Either way, trauma-focused treatment is the starting point.

What changes in treatment

The modalities do not change much. The sequencing does. Complex trauma usually needs a longer stabilization phase before any processing work begins, because the regulation capacity that single-event processing assumes has often never been built. That is why RITTM front-loads safety and resourcing, and why our IOP tracks are frequently the right entry point for complex trauma rather than weekly outpatient sessions.

What to Expect

Starting trauma treatment is its own kind of hard. Here is what the first steps actually look like, so there are no surprises.

  • Reach Out — Call, text, or book a consultation online. All communications are confidential.
  • Verify Your Benefits — Our team checks your coverage for you. Verification is obligation-free and completely confidential, and it creates no obligation to enroll in treatment.
  • Clinical Consultation — A clinician talks through what you are dealing with and which level of care fits your symptoms and your week.
  • Begin With Stabilization — Treatment opens with phase one of RITTM: safety, trust, and regulation. Not with the trauma. That order is deliberate.
  • Adjust As You Go — Levels of care step up or down as symptoms and circumstances change. Nothing is fixed at intake.

Insurance & Verifying Your Benefits

Frequently Asked Questions

Does online PTSD therapy actually work?

Research on trauma-focused psychotherapy delivered over secure video has compared it against the same treatment delivered in an office, and it holds up. All Reconnect care is virtual, across every level of care.

What happens in a virtual PTSD therapy session?

You join from a private space on your own device. Sessions are 1:1 with a trauma specialist. Your clinician tracks arousal and dissociation on camera and adjusts pace in real time.

Is complex PTSD treated differently from PTSD?

The modalities do not change much, but the sequencing does. Complex trauma usually needs a longer stabilization phase before processing begins, which is why RITTM front-loads safety and regulation.

Which level of care is right for me?

It depends on symptom severity and what your week can hold. Virtual PHP runs 25 hours weekly, Virtual IOP 9 to 15, and Virtual Outpatient 3 to 6. Evening IOP (9 hours a week) is currently paused.

What is RITTM?

RITTM is Dr. Karol Darsa’s proprietary three-phase trauma model: stabilization and safety, then trauma processing, then integration and growth. It integrates EMDR, Brainspotting, somatic and sensorimotor work, mindfulness and HeartMath coherence training.

Does insurance cover online PTSD therapy?

Coverage depends on your plan and your level of care. Our team verifies benefits for you, and verification is obligation-free and completely confidential.

Do I need to be in California?

Reconnect is licensed in California. Ask our team about current availability before assuming coverage in another state.

Is this an emergency service?

No. Your clinician can help with safety planning and de-escalation, but sessions are not an emergency service. If you are in immediate danger, call 911 or 988.
