Depression Trauma-Rooted Care
Reconnect Center delivers online depression treatment across California, from intensive IOP to weekly outpatient care. Where depression grows out of unresolved trauma, we treat the wounds underneath it.

Key Takeaways
- Online depression treatment at Reconnect means 1:1 virtual sessions with trauma specialists, delivered over secure video alongside small-group work.
- Trauma-first, not symptom-only: EMDR, Brainspotting and somatic therapy work on what drives depression, integrated through the RITTM model.
- Four depression presentations treated: major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and trauma-related depression.
- Five virtual levels of care, from 25 hours weekly in Virtual PHP down to flexible Trauma Coaching.
Understanding Depression
Depression involves lasting changes in mood, energy, sleep and thinking that make ordinary days hard to get through. When unresolved trauma sits underneath, medication and standard talk therapy may ease symptoms without reaching what drives them. Trauma-focused care addresses both, and it works over video.
At Reconnect, we understand that many forms of depression have traumatic roots. Our approach treats not just the symptoms but the underlying experiences that created them.

Major Depressive Disorder
Characterized by persistent depressed mood, loss of interest in activities, significant changes in weight or sleep, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, and difficulty concentrating that lasts for two weeks or more.
Persistent Depressive Disorder
A chronic form of depression lasting two years or longer, where you may function day-to-day but feel a constant undercurrent of low mood, low energy, and diminished self-esteem.
Bipolar Disorder
Involving cycles of depressive episodes and periods of elevated mood or energy. Trauma can exacerbate mood cycling and make stabilization more difficult without integrated treatment.
Trauma-Related Depression
Depression that develops directly as a consequence of traumatic experiences, where the depressive symptoms are deeply intertwined with unprocessed grief, loss, betrayal, or helplessness from the trauma.
Learn MoreRecognizing the Signs & Symptoms
Depression affects your mind, body and relationships. If several of these have persisted for two weeks or more, that is the point to book an evaluation rather than wait it out.
- Persistent Sadness or Emptiness — a pervasive feeling of sadness, hopelessness, or emotional emptiness that does not lift with positive events or circumstances. You may feel heavy, weighed down, or as though you are moving through life behind a wall of glass.
- Loss of Interest or Pleasure — activities, hobbies, and relationships that once brought joy no longer feel engaging or meaningful. This anhedonia can make life feel flat and colorless.
- Fatigue & Low Energy — overwhelming tiredness that is not relieved by rest. Even small tasks can feel exhausting, and getting through the day requires enormous effort.
- Sleep Changes — insomnia, early morning waking, or oversleeping. Your sleep may be fragmented, unrefreshing, or filled with distressing dreams.
- Concentration Difficulties — trouble focusing, making decisions, or remembering things. Depression can create a mental fog that makes it difficult to function at work, school, or in daily responsibilities, and reduce what you can hold in working memory.
- Feelings of Worthlessness or Guilt — harsh self-criticism, believing you are a burden to others, or carrying excessive guilt about things that are not your fault. These distorted beliefs are often connected to early traumatic experiences.
If you are in immediate danger or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988, or call 911.
Our Therapeutic Approach
We use a combination of evidence-based therapies to address depression from multiple angles, treating both the symptoms you experience today and the root causes beneath them. Early sessions focus on stabilization and skills. Trauma processing starts once you have the tools to stay grounded through it, not before.
EMDR for Trauma-Related Depression
When depression has traumatic roots, EMDR can process the underlying memories and experiences that created persistent feelings of helplessness, worthlessness and despair, reaching material that talk therapy alone may not.
Learn MoreBrainspotting
Brainspotting uses fixed eye position to access where traumatic experience is held in the body and brain, which can reach the shutdown and numbness that sit underneath depression rather than the thoughts on top of it.
Learn MoreSomatic Therapy
Depression often manifests as physical heaviness, constriction and fatigue. Somatic approaches work directly with the body to release stored tension, increase vitality and restore a sense of aliveness and agency.
Learn MoreSensorimotor Psychotherapy
A body-based approach to trauma that works with posture, movement and physical impulse, rebuilding nervous system regulation when depression has flattened your sense of connection to your own body.
Learn MoreCognitive Behavioral Therapy
CBT helps identify and challenge the negative thought patterns and cognitive distortions that fuel depression, replacing them with more balanced and accurate ways of thinking about yourself and your circumstances.
Learn MoreDialectical Behavior Therapy
DBT provides practical skills for managing intense emotions, building distress tolerance, and improving interpersonal effectiveness, all of which are essential when depression coexists with emotional volatility.
Learn MoreMindfulness-Based Therapy
Mindfulness practices help break the cycle of rumination that sustains depression, teaching you to observe thoughts and feelings without being consumed by them and to reconnect with the present moment.
Learn MoreThe RITTM Model
Our clinical team integrates these approaches through RITTM, the Reconnect Integrative Trauma Treatment Model developed by our founder. Rather than running one modality at a time, RITTM sequences them into a single phased plan built around your nervous system.
Learn MoreHow Online Depression Treatment Works
Online depression treatment delivers the same structured care as an in-person program, over secure video. You get assessment, a treatment plan, individual therapy, group sessions and skills practice between them, from wherever you are in California.
What changes is the logistics, not the clinical work. You need a private space, a reliable connection and time that does not get interrupted. Everything else is the same as it would be in a room.
Your first sessions are assessment and safety planning. Your clinician learns what you are dealing with, what has been tried before and what is happening in your body as well as your thinking. From there you and your team agree on a level of care and a starting plan.
After that, treatment settles into a weekly rhythm: individual sessions, group work, and practice in between that puts new skills into your actual life rather than leaving them in the session. Progress gets reviewed regularly, and your plan changes as you do. If you need more structure, you can step up. As things ease, you can step down.
Online Depression Programs: IOP, PHP and Outpatient
Every Reconnect program is delivered by secure telehealth to adults in California. There is no in-person option and no facility to travel to, which is the point: you get program-level intensity without leaving your life to get it.
Virtual PHP
Our most structured level of care, with individual and group therapy each weekday. Built for people who need intensive daily support to stabilize and begin trauma work.
Learn MoreVirtual IOP
The same clinical depth on a lighter weekly schedule, combining individual therapy with group sessions and skills practice across the week.
Learn MoreEvening IOP (currently paused)
The same program delivered outside working hours, for people holding down a job, studying or caregiving during the day.
Learn MoreVirtual Outpatient
Steady weekly individual therapy, for ongoing trauma processing, skill-building and relapse prevention, including as a step-down from IOP.
Learn MoreTrauma Coaching
Flexible, goal-focused support alongside or after clinical care, for keeping momentum between and beyond programs.
Learn MoreWhich one fits depends on how much structure you need right now, not on how serious you judge your depression to be. That call is made with a clinician at assessment, and it can change as you do.

How Online Intake Works
Starting treatment should not be the hardest part of getting treatment. Here is the whole process, start to finish.
- Confidential Inquiry — tell us what you are experiencing and when you are generally available. All communications are confidential.
- Benefits Verification — our team verifies your insurance coverage for you. Verification is obligation-free and completely confidential, and you are not committing to anything by asking.
- Clinical Assessment — a clinician meets with you online to understand your symptoms, your history and what you want treatment to change.
- Personalized Plan — together you agree on a level of care, from Virtual PHP through IOP to outpatient, and map out what your first weeks will look like.
- Orientation & Tech Check — we set you up on the secure, HIPAA-compliant platform and walk through your individual and group schedule before your first session.
- Begin Care — you start sessions with a clear plan, a named clinician and regular reviews built in.
Supporting Someone Through Depression Treatment
If you are here for someone else, a partner, an adult child, a parent, you are the reason a lot of people get care at all. It helps to know what your part actually is.
When someone is in a structured virtual program rather than weekly therapy, the useful thing you can do is protect the conditions around their care: a private space, an uninterrupted hour, a household that treats session time as real. That is genuinely more valuable than managing the treatment itself, which is their clinician’s job and theirs.
You will also see less than you would expect. Virtual care is private by design, and progress in trauma work is rarely linear or visible from outside. Weeks that look like nothing is happening are often the weeks where the most is.
If they are not ready to call, you can start the conversation with our team yourself. We will talk you through the options with no obligation and no pressure on them.

We accept most major plans including Aetna, Cigna, Blue Shield and United Healthcare. Our intake team can verify your benefits for you before you commit to anything.
Verification and communication are obligation-free and completely confidential. If coverage is the question standing between you and treatment, it is worth asking before you rule anything out.

What is a depression IOP, and is it available online?
An intensive outpatient program provides several hours of structured treatment a week, combining individual therapy with group sessions and skills practice. Reconnect delivers IOP entirely by telehealth to adults in California, with a daytime track (the evening track is currently paused).
Can I attend depression treatment after work hours?
Our Evening IOP, which runs the same program outside working hours, is currently paused. Contact us to join the evening list, or ask our admissions team which daytime option fits around your job or caregiving.
What are some ways to treat major depression without medication?
Structured therapy programs treat depression without prescribing. Reconnect uses EMDR, Brainspotting and somatic therapy within RITTM, our integrative trauma model. If you are also working with a prescriber, your therapy plan runs alongside that care.
How is trauma-focused depression treatment different?
Standard depression care works on current symptoms. When unresolved trauma is contributing, treatment also works on what is driving them, which is where EMDR, Brainspotting and somatic approaches come in.
What types of depression do you treat?
Major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder, bipolar disorder and trauma-related depression. Your assessment clarifies the picture and guides your treatment plan.
How do I choose between PHP, IOP and outpatient?
You do not have to choose alone. Your clinician recommends a starting level of care at assessment based on how much structure will help you right now, and you can step up or down as that changes. Our program comparison page sets out what each one involves.
Is depression treatment covered by insurance?
We accept most major plans including Aetna, Cigna, Blue Shield and United Healthcare. Our intake team verifies your benefits for you, and verification is obligation-free and completely confidential.
Do I need to be in California?
Reconnect Center is licensed in California, and care is provided to adults located in California at the time of their sessions. Ask our team about current availability before assuming coverage elsewhere.
Is this an emergency service?
No. Your clinician can help with safety planning and grounding between sessions, but this is not an emergency service. If you are in immediate danger or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988, or call 911.
